Friends of Bichon Frisé Rescue produces a twice yearly magazine which is full of Bichon stories, jokes, members letters and much more. We also sell a number of products including greetings cards, shampoos, combs, yearly calendar, etc. We are non profit making (we do not take any money for ourselves - we are just volunteers who love the breed and want to try to make a difference) and, along with direct donations made by our members, we donate money to various organisations when they have a Bichon who needs medical treatment. WE DO NOT REHOME OR RESCUE DOGS OURSELVES. However, please look at our Dogs in ResQ page for details of Bichons in rescue centres throughout the UK who are looking for their forever home.
Through no fault of their own hundreds of Bichons need rehoming each year. The most common reasons Bichons come into rescue are:-
- Owners moving abroad - Marriage breaks up - Owner no longer has time to care for Bichon (i.e. new baby or new job) - Owner dies or becomes too ill to manage - Owner is unaware of dedication required to look after dog (i.e. grooming, vet bills, etc) - Strays - From a Puppy Factory/Farm - either ex breeding dogs or puppies that have medical problems
Please think carefully before you get a dog. If you do not want to adopt a puppy/dog from a rescue centre then PLEASE please also be very careful about where you purchase you dog/puppy from as we are hearing more stories about people buying dogs and then discovering they have come from a puppy farm background. Puppy farm dogs aren't only sold directly from puppy farms but also via the internet, pet shops, free ad newspapers, car boot sales (no I'm not joking) etc. If in doubt don't buy the dog as if you do believe it is from a puppy farm all you are doing is creating space for the farmer to breed more dogs.
Our Objective
The objective of Friends of Bichon Frisé Rescue is to be able to have sufficient funds to enable us to pay for whole operations for Bichons in rescue. Our donations page shows some of the dogs we have helped by making a contribution but we want to be able to do more. Our aim is to have funds ready so that there is no delay in a Bichon receiving treatment - no fundraising would be required and the dog will, therefore, be treated quickly and ready to find their forever home sooner. We can only do this because people generously give us donations, buy our merchandise and/or subscribe to our magazine and we can't thank them enough. We can make a difference and every penny really does help.
* Friends of Bichon Frisé Rescue is an independent organisation that was founded to help Bichons in need. * For Bichon Frisé Rescue and Henry's Fund please see our links page
Jan Jacobs
Jan is one of the co-founders of Friends of Bichon Frisé Rescue Magazine. The magazine first began in 1997 and is issued worldwide.
She had her first Bichon in 1984 and continued with her passion for Bichons over the years. Learning of the sorry situations Bichons get into led her to realise she perhaps, just perhaps, could help with Bichon Frisé Rescue and simultaneously somehow raise funds to support Bichons. This is where the magazine, started with her lovely friend Diane, was born.
Please contact Jan with any issues or queries relating to the Friends of Bichon Frisé Rescue Magazine or if you have any information you think might be useful to our members. Her email address is JanDogsIOW@aol.com
Clair Renfrew
Clair joined Friends in 2006 to help edit and provide articles/competitions for the magazine. She has since recently taken on the role of Webmaster and Treasurer.
Clair acquired first her Bichon, Lucy, in 1988 following lots of begging and pleading to her parents. She began showing Lucy as a hobby and Lucy was later joined by her daughters April and Becky. She enjoyed handling and was awarded Junior Handler of the Year at the Mid-Eastern Counties Bichon Frisé Club show in 1989. She then started taking other breeds into the ring on behalf of their owners; Briards, Chow Chows, Polish Lowland Sheepdogs, Shelties, to name but a few. A design fault with her right tibia requiring a major operation put an end to her showing career.
Having lost all her Bichons to illness, and despite loving the breed very much, she couldn't bring herself to be owned by another one straight away. She now lives with a rescued Labrador Cross and a Tibetan Terrier but her home still displays a growing collection of all things Bichon.
If you have any news, stories or gossip from the North East that you would like to pass on to other Bichon lovers, then please email Clair at fbfrmag@yahoo.co.uk or enquiries@friendsofbichonfriserescue.co.uk.
