BICHON PHOTOGRAPHS WANTED

PLEASE SEND THEM TO US BY END OF MAY 2011 - COMPLETELY FREE TO ENTER

We are now seeking Bichon photographs for our 2012 calendar.  Ideally we would like photographs with Bichons showing off their beautiful fluffy round heads (as shown in the main photograph of the front cover of our 2011 calendar and this, obviously, doesn't apply to puppies).  The photograph doesn’t have to be of a current dog you own and we would love to have some puppy pictures aswell.  To download the form click here for pdf format.

We have had some problems with the quality of photographs received last year.  They were very good pictures and for everyday use the quality was fine but when our design team tried to enlarge them for the calendar the pixels began to show (each photograph is made up of tiny little squares and when enlarged the squares become visible).  So, we asked the team what they recommended and they kindly provided us with some guidelines.

PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDELINES

General

Please avoid using camera phones as the resolution is generally not good enough

Please set camera setting to the highest quality - 5 mega pixels being best

Focal point of the image should be the dogs eyes

Try not to crop pictures as sometimes they can not be used

When taking the shots try to include fore/backgrounds of interest, i.e. flowers, don't make it too fussy to detract from the dog

Keep the photographs as flat as possible as they are going to be scanned and any creases/pin holes will show up.

External Shots

In order to get the best from external photography a few simple guidelines can be followed:-

Always choose a bright day. It doesn't have to be brilliant sunshine but a bright day will usually give best results. Make sure, however that the sun is behind you when take the image.

Try to avoid taking shots on overcast, dull days when the cloud is heavy.  This gives images a very flat look and photographs will suffer from looking dull and uninteresting.

Try and avoid white or light backgrounds as the dogs will not be very visible.

Internal Shots

In order to achieve best results when shooting interior photography some additional lighting is best used to get an even balance of light over the whole shot.  This is not always possible, so follow these basic rules and a better photograph should be achieved:

If you want a close up shot, try to get onto the dogs level! Avoid photographing pets from too high a viewpoint.

Take your shot from the side. Try to avoid shooting the subject front on.

Large rooms are best shot using the available light.  If possible, override the flash on your camera, the camera should then give you an automatic reading from the available light.  Most built in flashes do not have the range to light a full room, so if you don't disable the flash, you will end up with an uneven light balance.
